A used asphalt plant lets you start production with a much smaller investment than a new plant. But the purchase price is only part of the total cost: dismantling, transport, installation, missing parts and automation must also be taken into account. Setrafalt does not sell plants; we dismantle, transport and install the plant you buy. That is why we know the surprises that most often come up on site. On this page we explain what to check when buying a used asphalt plant.

See the plant running
If possible, watch the plant while it is producing. Burner ignition, drum rotation, screen vibration, the behaviour of the scales and the filter suction tell you a lot while the plant is running. In a plant that has stood idle for a long time, hidden faults only show up at commissioning.
Mechanical checklist
- Drying drum: Shell, flights, drive system and bearings
- Burner: Age, maintenance history, fuel type
- Elevator and screen: Chain, buckets, screen meshes, vibration motors
- Mixer: Wear on arms, paddles and liner plates
- Baghouse filter: Condition of the bags, pulse-jet system, fan
- Silos and bitumen tanks: Shell, heating system, insulation
- Conveyors: Belts, pulleys and rollers
Electrics and automation
The plant’s control panels, cables and automation software are the most overlooked part. Is the software still supported? Can the licence be transferred to the new owner? Will it run if the computer is replaced? If the automation is outdated, the software can be renewed without touching the panels; see our partner DKT’s automation retrofit page.
Include dismantling and transport in the price
Dismantling the plant at its current site, transporting it and installing it at the new site are a major part of the total cost. Getting a quote for this work before you buy shows you the real cost when comparing two plants. A cheap plant at a distant site can end up costing more in total than a slightly more expensive plant nearby. For details, see our asphalt plant transport page.
Identify missing parts from the start
Missing parts are common in plants that have stood idle for a long time or have been partly dismantled. A survey before dismantling lists missing and worn parts so they can be replaced before installation. On request we also supply spare parts.
What does Setrafalt do?
We survey the used plant you have bought at its current site, and one team handles dismantling, transport and installation at the new site. The plant is tested at the new site and handed over ready for production. For details, see our asphalt plant dismantling, relocation and installation page.
Frequently asked questions
Does Setrafalt sell used asphalt plants?
No. We do not sell plants; we dismantle, transport and install the plant you buy.
Should I have a survey done before buying a used plant?
Yes. Knowing the dismantling and transport cost and the missing and worn parts before you buy helps you make the right decision.
Is it risky to buy a plant with old automation?
It is risky if the software is no longer supported, but the software can be renewed without touching the panels. Always check the condition of the automation before you buy.
How long until the plant is running at the new site?
It depends on the type of plant, the condition of its parts and the infrastructure of the new site. After the survey, the schedule is given in writing.
